Guides Trail camera megapixels
Trail camera megapixels Why 40 MP isn't 40 MP
A trail camera's megapixel number is usually the size of the file it saves, not the resolution of its sensor. TrailCamPro says the native resolution of 99% of trail cameras is 5 megapixels or less, and every camera in our database that it has tested lists an interpolated photo setting. Browning's 2025 Defender quotes 1080p instead, which is about 2 MP and honest.
“Trail Camera Megapixels are a LIE?” is a long-running r/trailcam thread (thread), and the question keeps coming back: Best actual image quality (not claimed MP), Moultrie Edge 3 Image Quality, and a Flex-M owner’s “Terrible resolution” (thread).
What the Claims Say vs What Testing Found
| Camera | Maker’s photo setting | Independent finding |
|---|---|---|
| Tactacam Reveal Pro 4.0 | 4K (UHD) or 2.5K | 4K setting interpolated (TrailCamPro) |
| Tactacam Reveal X 4.0 | 4K | 4K setting interpolated (TrailCamPro) |
| Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 | 4K or 2.5K | 4K setting interpolated (TrailCamPro) |
| Spypoint Flex-M | 28 MP | 28 MP setting interpolated (TrailCamPro) |
| Browning Defender Pro Scout Max HD | 1080p Full HD images (2025) | Earlier version’s 24 MP setting interpolated (TrailCamPro) |
| Moultrie Edge 3 / Edge 4 | 40 MP | Not tested individually |
| Moultrie Edge 3 Pro / Edge 4 Pro | 50 MP | Not tested individually |
| Spypoint Flex-M2 | 32 MP | Not tested yet |
TrailCamPro’s 2026 shootout puts it plainly: “the native resolution of 99% of all trail cameras is 5 megapixels or less” (shootout).
Why Cameras Do It
A bigger number sells. Interpolation enlarges the image in the camera’s processor, so a 40 MP file has more pixels but no more detail than the sensor captured. It also makes files bigger, which matters on a cell cam: the photo that reaches your phone is usually a compressed thumbnail, and full-resolution files cost extra. Tactacam sells 50 HD photo requests for $5, Spypoint sells a 50-photo Full-HD pack for $5, and Browning’s Unlimited plan includes 12 HD image uploads (plan costs).
What Predicts a Good Photo
- Detection distance and angle: a buck at 60 ft is useless if the camera only sees 40. The Spypoint Flex-M measured 120 ft; the Reveal X 3.0, 60 ft.
- Trigger and recovery: a 0.3 s trigger catches the deer in frame; a 65 s recovery misses the one behind it.
- Flash range and type: low-glow reaches farther; no-glow is harder for people and animals to spot.
- Independent sample photos: the only real test of sharpness at night.

Common questions
Are trail camera megapixels fake?
The number is real as a file size but misleading as a measure of detail. The camera enlarges a smaller sensor image in software (interpolation). That adds pixels, not detail.
Why do my cell cam photos look worse than the SD card photos?
Cellular cameras usually send a small, compressed version to save data and battery. Full-resolution photos come off the card or are sent on request; Tactacam and Spypoint each sell 50 HD photos for $5.
What should I look at instead of megapixels?
Independent sample photos at night, detection distance, trigger speed and recovery time. A sharp 2 MP photo of a buck beats a blurred 32 MP one.
